6 Days / 5 Nights / 9 Meals / Guided Tours / Passion Play / Oktoberfest
This is our special scheduled tour and IT ONLY TAKES PLACE EVERY 10-YEARS!!! – a 6-day journey to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, the castles of King Ludwig II, and the world famous Oktoberfest in Munich!
Day 1 – USA/Munich
Upon arrival in Munich, you will be met at the airport by your driver who will transfer you to the Mercure Old Town Hotel in Munich for an evening of rest before your adventure begins the next morning.
Day 2 – Munich, Chiemsee Lake, Fraueninsel Island Village & Tegernsee
You start off with a marvelous day at Bavaria’s largest lake, Chiemsee. The largest of three islands is home to King Ludwig’s second huge building project, the magnificent Herrenchiemsee Palace, also know as the Bavarian Versailles.
It is a lovely boat ride to get there and once you arrive, you'll have an inside tour of this fantastic building. Plenty of time for photos, shopping and to enjoy the spectacular fountains in the garden. For lunch you'll take another boat to the second island Fraueninsel (The Women’s Island) Village famous for the Kloster Liquor spirit, which is produced by the nuns.
Tonight you sleep at the relaxing Tegernsee and the lovely Bachmair Hotel right by the lake. You'll enjoy a wonderful Bavarian Welcome Dinner or weather permitting a private grill party in the lovely garden.
Day 3 – Tegernsee, Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Today is the big day! The history of the Passion Play begins nearly 400 years ago when the plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not spare Oberammergau. The surviving villagers pledged to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. In 1634, the passion play was born.
On your way to Oberammergau you'll first stop at Ettal Monestary. With its imposing and unique appearance, it is one of the masterpieces of Bavarian architecture. Upon arrival in Oberammergau you'll have time for strolling, shopping, and of course lunch. Part 1 of the play starts in the early afternoon followed by a lengthy break for dinner and Part 2.
Afterwards it is a short ride to your hotel in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Day 4 – Linderhof Palace, Neuschwanstein Castle, Munich
It is King Ludwig’s day: you have inside visits to both Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. First you will visit Linderhof, the opulent small mountain palace, where the king basically lived for the last decade of his life and is the only building that Ludwig was able to complete. The palace, with its baroque gardens full of fountained terraces, is set majestically in the mountain forest of the Ammergau Mountains.
King Ludwig’s most famous castle, Neuschwanstein, is in the afternoon. Magnificently perched at the edge of the Alps, Neuschwanstein is a visual and historical delight. You will be given plenty of historical and background information on King Ludwig, his projects, along with the history of his family and Bavaria before your inside locally-guided tour.
Tonight you sleep at the Eurostar Grand Central Hotel and dine on your own in Munich.
Day 5 - Munich, Oktoberfest
You start the day with a special walking tour of Munich, the adopted home town of your tour operators. You'll stay in the city center receiving information on Munich and the history of beer in Bavaria. You will see the Neues Rathaus (new city hall), the Viktualienmarkt, the Munich Residenz, the Hofbräuhaus and more.
You then take the subway to the Theresienwiese, the field where the Oktoberfest is held every year. You will learn about the history of the Fest and get a good orientation of the fairgrounds and attractions. Then it is time for your afternoon seat in the Löwenbräu Tent, where you have 4-1/2 hours to enjoy the beer, the music, the atmosphere and the comraderie.
