Day 3: After a wonderfully fulfilling breakfast, you will embark on one of three excursions (your choice) as follows:
Arenal Volcano National Park
Arenal Volcano National Park is a protected area in northern Costa Rica. It’s known for its hot springs, active Arenal Volcano and wildlife, including jaguars and tree frogs. Las Coladas Trail winds through forest to a cooled lava field. Rainbow bass inhabit the waters of Lake Arenal, which is popular for water sports thanks to its reliable winds. Southeast, the crater of dormant Cerro Chato Volcano features a lake.
Arenal Hanging Bridges
The history of Mistico Park, where you can find Costa Rica’s famous hanging bridges, began at the beginning of the 20th century. Spouses Landelina Rodríguez Sánchez and Adrian Castillo, who were natives of La Fortuna, San Carlos, dedicated their time to working the land they had inherited from their parents in the foothills of the Arenal Volcano.
In those times, this incredibly rich natural land was ignored as it was far from the city and difficult to access. However, the Castillo Rodriguez family had great vision, as they knew the true value of their land could be found in its natural resources. Thus, they made the decision to keep this wooded portion of the mountain intact.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the family decided to open this natural forest sanctuary to the public, and they hired a company in order to develop the Hanging Bridges of Arenal eco-tourism project, which would allow thousands of people to enjoy the forest’s beauty comfortably and safely.
Twelve years later, as per the initial agreement, the development company returned the project to its owners, and the family’s third generation currently manages the nature reserve.
La Fortuna Waterfall
La Fortuna Waterfall is in central Costa Rica, in the Alajuela Province. In Spanish, it is known as Catarata Fortuna. The waterfall drops about 70−75 meters and is at the base of the dormant Chato volcano, about 5.5 km outside of the town of La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano.
Day 4: After breakfast at Hotel Lavas de Tacotel, you will take boat and ground transportation to Monteverde to experience a culture rich Trapiche Tour.
El Trapiche tour, is owned by a costarican family. It begins with a tour around the farm providing you an opportunity to observe the different plantations located therein, besides crossing a small patch of forest where occasionally wildlife can be found.
During the tour of the farm there is a small tilapia pond, plantations of bananas, plantains, arracache, macadamia, oranges, sugar cane and coffee.
In the span of the walk around the farm, they will explain the process involved in sugarcane cultivation, natural history and also the opportunity to taste the sugar cane and its derivatives.
They will display the coffee process, which starts showing from planting and continues with the process of crushing, peeling and roasting by our machinery.
To finish the tour of the plantation, you’re invited to make a short trip in an oxen cart (not obligatory), it starts from sugar cane plantation and finishes at the building where the cocoa process is shown.
Day 4 Continued: After learning more about local culture, you will be escorted to Hotel Montana Monteverde for a restful and peaceful evening. You will spend two evenings in this luxurious property.
Hotel Montana Monteverde
High on the ridge above the coastal plain is the town of Santa Elena, and the adjacent farming colony and Cloud Forest Reserve of Monteverde.
At an altitude of over 4000 feet, the tropical woods are composed of six different ecological communities, which differ from those found in the other communities.
Consequently, the diversity of plant and animal life in the Monteverde region is extremely high. Over 2000 plant species are native of the area; more than 320 birds and 100 mammals have been observed.
Day 5: This is a very special day as you get to take in the Monteverde Cloud Forrest.
Monteverde Cloud Forrest
What exactly are the infamous cloud forests of Monteverde Costa Rica? Often taking the form of fog, these clouds hover around the upper canopy of the forest before condensing onto the leaves of trees and dripping onto the plants below.
Understandably, the sun has a hard time breaking through this thick veil of clouds. This causes a slower rate of evaporation and thus provides the plants with a bounty of life-giving moisture. This moisture helps to promote a huge amount of biodiversity, particularly within the type of plants known as epiphytes.
These plants grow on other plants (including trees) non-parasitically, collecting their moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and debris that surround them. Common examples include lichens, orchids, and bromeliads, all of which are abundant in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Cloud forests also tend to host a large number of endemic species, as their unique climates and specialized ecosystems create habitats that are not found anywhere else on Earth.
Day 6: Off on a new Costa Rican adventure via a transfer to Canon de La Vieja to embark on one of two adventures (your choice) as follows:
Sky Trek is a unique system of trails, suspension bridges and zip lines that allows visitors to observe the rain forest from a variety of different vantage points – from above, below, and within the canopy itself.
Canyon de La Vieja Lodge offers you the beautiful experience of a horseback ride across that Guanacaste prairie in the company of a true Sabanero cowboy. This service can last between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your preference. You will be able to admire the beauty of the volcano and the view of its surroundings.
Day 6 Continued: No place better for your last evening in Costa Rica than Hotel Canon de la Vieja.
Hotel Canon de la Vieja
Surrounded by beautiful gardens just 30 km from Papagayo Gulf, the hotel offers for the traveler a different way to live the natural beauties that surround the Guanacaste National Parks as Santa Rosa and Rincon de la Vieja. The hotel is located 18 km East from Liberia International Airport , in the province of Guanacaste.
Developed to help people disconnect from their daily lives and with a vision of sustainability, the Canon de la Vieja Lodge is a destination for relaxation and adventure. The nearby Rincon de la Vieja National Park, named after the 1,895m volcano within, has established trails that wind their way to the summit crater. This volcano, which commonly spews steam, is the largest of five that comprise the Cordillera de Guanacaste. Within this park lies the headwaters of innumerable rivers and ravines where crystalline waters plunge some 200 ft into blue lagoons.
Day 7: All great things must come to an end and you need to go home start building that vacation fund for your next amazing adventure. You will be escorted back to Daniel Oduber International Airport for your return home.
